These USGS offices will mail you a free index map for California so you can select the quad maps you may need for a trip. However, mail order sale of topo maps is done only through the Denver office. Map prices vary, but are generally $5 or $6. There is a $1.00 postage and handling fee for orders less than $10.00. The Denver address is:

    There are 18 National Forests in California that include 20 million acres of land, extending from the Oregon boarder in the north to the Mexican boarder in the south. The Forest Service manages these lands, which are located mainly in the Sierra Nevadas, the Cascade Mountains and the Coast ranges. For more information on wilderness permits, and the Pacific Southwest Region National Forest Wilderness in California you need to contact each individual district.

    California is one of the few states to have a boating department. They have some good maps and information on water trails to canoe, kayak, and whitewater raft in California.
  • California River Flow Numbers
    River inflows and releases are daily averages in CFS (cubic feet per second). Be sure to check the date of the recording as flows can vary every day in the spring during snow-melt months of the year (April, May are usually the high water months, and sometimes June).
