Destination Profile - Panama

Made famous by the engineering wonder of the Panama Canal, this small country offers an incredible variety of scenic wonders and cultural discoveries. Home to over 940 species of birds and several indigenous Indian communities, Panama also boasts cloud forests, rainforests, beautiful beaches and islands, and a wealth of national parks and reserves. Our trips offer you the choice of general sightseeing through Panama City and the canal, the highlands towns of Boquete and Cerro Punta and coastal areas of the San Blas Islands and Bocas del Toro, or very concentrated special interest tours focusing on bird-watching, environmental projects, or Indian communities.

Below, we've highlighted some of our more popular groupitineraries. Latin American Escapes specializes in custom designed itineraries--just select the components of these group trips you like, add any extra days or destinations that suit your specific interests, vacation time, and budget, and we'll design the perfect itinerary just for you.

For a complete listing of our group and independent offerings including a brief description, best time of the year to travel, and costs, go to our Panama Trip Index. You can contact us to request specific itineraries and for help designing a custom trip or by calling 800-510-5999.

Panama Cultural Trips--Best of Panama  is a group tour offered monthly that includes time in and around Panama City & its neighboring rainforests, the highlands towns of Boquete, and local cultural encounters with the native Embera and Kuna communities.  A bit more adventurous is our Panama Discovery itinerary, that allows options for white water rafting, a Panama Canal transit, and includes the Caribbean coastal paradise of Bocas del Toro.  Independent extensions can be added to the autonomous San Blas Islands, where you can visit local villages and purchase exquisite molas, the famed applique artwork of the Kuna Indians. Another fun excursion is a trip down the Chagres river to visit a native Embera Indian community.

Panama Adventure Trips--The true adventurists will be able to hike across the original "route between the seas" on our Camino Real Trek, which ends in Portobello on the Caribbean coast. A one hour train ride following the trans-isthmian route back to Panama City completes your journey.

Panama is famous for its remote Darien Gap--the rainforest region just north of Colombia that connects the South and North American continents. We offer group trips with set departure dates, but you can also form your own group and enjoy a private trip anytime between January and April. Besides some heavy duty hiking, visitors to the Darien will enjoy encounters with local Indian cultures, and a wide variety of bird and animal life. Request an itinerary for our Darien Explorer Trek to explore the diversity of this mysterious region.

White water rafting and comfortable cloud forest hiking are also available in the highlands region, and sea kayaking is a popular sport in the Bocas del Toro archipelago and all coastal regions.

Panama Natural History Trips-- Panama's location as a narrow strip of land between North and South America mean that most migrating birds will pass through the country. It also boasts a high count of endimic birds.  In short, with over 900 bird species recorded in the country so far, Panama is a phenomenal bird watching destination! For you natural history lovers, we provide you with expert birding guides on two different options for group tours.  The Birds of Panama is an extensive 14-day trip visiting rainforests and cloud forests and the Darien region. Highlights of Avian Panama is an 8 day adventure visiting the rainforests near to Panama city, Cloud forests of the Chiriqui Highlands, and pre-montane forests of the Kuna Yala foothills. Both trips inlcude a visit to La Amistad International Park and World Biosphere Reserve. Latin American Escapes also designs customized bird watching expeditions.
